Fort Drum releases additional information about soldier killed Sunday


FORT DRUM — The post on Tuesday released additional information about a 10th Mountain Division soldier killed Sunday in Afghanistan.

Spc. Javier Sanchez Jr., 28, of Greenfield, Calif., died during a mounted patrol in Sar Rowzah after his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device.

Spc. Sanchez was an infantryman in the Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.

According to a press release from post, Spc. Sanchez joined the Army in August 2006, and after assignments in Germany and California came to Fort Drum in December 2011. He was on the second deployment of his career when he died, after deploying to Iraq from 2008 to 2009.

Among Spc. Sanchez’s awards and decorations were the Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, two Overseas Service Ribbons, the NATO Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He also completed the Combat Life Savers and the Warrior Leader courses. He is survived by his wife, mother, father, sister and brother.

The death was first announced by the Department of Defense on Monday night.

Spc. Sanchez is the division’s 299th combat death since Sept. 11. 2001.

On Tuesday, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo directed flags to fly at half-staff in honor of Spc. Sanchez.
