Ogdensburg Public Library gets $24G share of a $200,000 state grant.

Ogdensburg Public Library will get a $24,000 share of a $200,000 state grant for improvements.

Assemblywoman Addie J. Russell, D-Theresa, announced Monday that construction grants were awarded to public libraries in Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties. The funding will pay for renovation and construction projects.

Library Executive Director Wayne L. Miller said $24,732 is coming to the 312 Washington St. landmark.

“The Ogdensburg Public Library requested funds to replace two failing sections of stucco on the second story of the north and west sides of our historic building,” he said. “Sections of stucco of various sizes have been patched over the years as portions have fallen off. The underlying materials, metal lathe and wood furring, are deteriorated to the point that in some sections they are totally gone.”

He said the library plans to remove 970 square feet of deteriorated stucco, and repair or replace 114 feet of flashing at base of stucco sections where it meets new flat roof membrane. The work will be accurate to the building’s historic architecture, he said. And the grant comes just in time.

“The awarding of this much needed grant is timely, especially given the recent collapse of a large section due to be replaced,” Mr. Miller said. “We knew we were on borrowed time.”

The grant will complement other funds that the library has committed to pay for the renovations.
