BRIER HILL — The new Brier Hill fire station under construction is designed to be a fully functional community center.

The result of a six-year planning process, the new $1 million station, at School Street and Route 37, will be roughly twice the size of the one now in use, Fire Chief Shawn R. Macaulay said.

James R. Lowery, chairman of the building committee, said the new station is expected to be ready to house the fire department in November, with the community center opening in 2014. D.C. Building Systems, Watertown, is the general contractor.

Mr. Macaulay said the new station will be capable of holding the department’s five trucks as well its boat, which now sits outside.

And with the larger station, he said, the community center will be available year-round without having to move the firetrucks out of the building whenever an event is planned.

“Now everything will be able to fit inside,” he said.

Another aspect of the project that’s designed to make the fire station more functional for the community is the addition of a full kitchen, Town Councilor David W. Stout III said.

Mr. Stout said the Volunteer Fire Department is paying for the project with community support.

Donations and fundraisers have made the project possible, he said.

“It’s definitely been a community project,” Mr. Macaulay said.

The fire department is looking for an additional $200,000 to finish the project.

The next fundraiser planned is the department’s fourth annual lawn mower race Saturday.

The day’s events include a car audio competition from 1 to 4 p.m., followed by a chicken barbecue at 4 p.m., at the fire station.

The lawn mower races will begin at 6 p.m. at the ballfield grounds, with a $3-per-person entrance fee.

A raffle will be held and refreshments, and food will be served all day at the ballfield.
