Betty J. Olander


Betty Jane Olander, age 87, passed away on June 24th, 2013. She was born in Jacksonville, FL on January 2, 1926 to Elizabeth Richardson Austin and Seymour F. Austin. She graduated from Watertown HS in 1943. Betty worked as an accountant for the Post Exchange at Pine Camp 1943-46. After moving to Dayton OH in 1960 she volunteered in the public schools, then worked as a para-professional teaching reading and math from 1976 - 81. The Olanders moved back to Watertown NY in 1981. Betty Olander was a life member of the Ohio PTA, a Cub Scout commissioner and Girl Scout leader. She was a 5 year Post President and life member of Barben-Jones VFW Post 1400 Ladies Auxillary; a member of both American Legion Post 61 and The North Side Improvement League Auxilliaries. Betty married William S. Olander on June 9, 1946. They celebrated their 60th anniversary before his passing in 2007. Betty and Bill owned a cottage on Lake Ontario in Knobby Knoll where they spent their summers and created many happy memories for their family. She is preceded in death by her husband, William S. Olander. She is survived by her children, Kathryn (Norman) Luthman, Betty (Don) Green, Sharon (Ralph) Tangeman, Bill (Mary) Olander, Bob (Tiffany) Olander, 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, sister, Mary Lou Lieblong of Little Rock AK, and brother, Robert Austin of Mannsville NY. Visitation will be held July 9th, 2013 from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM with a memorial service immediately following at 6:30 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home South Chapel. A grave side service will be held at Brookside Cemetary in Watertown NY on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to VFW Post 1400, Barben Ave., Watertown NY 13601 in memory of Betty.
