CANTON — St. Lawrence County residents are being warned of a potential phone scam. Sheriff Kevin M. Wells announced Tuesday that his office has received reports recently that residents have been receiving phone calls from Securus Customer Service.

According to a release put out by the sheriff, the calls are coming from 866-847-1251 and a person on the other end is claiming to represent the sheriff’s office, “demanding money for phone calls from the inmates.”

An attempt to reach an operator at the number provided by the sheriff’s office landed only an automated voice that said anyone receiving calls from the number were receiving a “text to connect” call from an inmate at a correctional facility where Securus provides telephone service.

“You received a text to connect call because our records indicated that you either didn’t have a calling account with us for your telephone number or an existing calling account didn’t have the funds to support the call,” the recorded voice said.

“The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office will never contact you to make payments for inmate phone calls nor will the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facilities Inmate phone provider (which is not Securus),” Sheriff Wells said in the statement.

In a phone call, the sheriff added that his office is not investigating the company and that no one has reported being scammed as of yet. The calls are not legitimate calls, he said, and residents who receive them are asked to disregard them and report them to the sheriff’s office at 379-2222.
