Former R&B receiver Wash to go into semipro football hall


CANTON, Ohio — Longtime Watertown Red and Black wide receiver Earnest Wash will be inducted into the American Football Association’s Semipro/Minor League Hall of Fame tonight at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Wash is one of 20 inductees set to be honored at the 33rd annual event and will be sponsored by Red and Black coach/general manager George Ashcraft.

Wash debuted for the Red and Black in 1988 and retired after the 2011 season as the team’s all-time leader in receiving yards and touchdowns. He played in at least parts of 15-to-17 seasons, he estimated in a 2011 Times interview.

The Fort Wayne, Ind., native retired from the U.S. Army in 2011 after 25 years of service with the rank of E8 master sergeant. He served deployments in Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Egypt.

n The Watertown Revolution will host the Troy Fighting Irish at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Carthage High School in an Northeastern Football Alliance East interdivision matchup. The Revolution (2-2) suffered a 56-6 home loss to the Finger Lakes Impact last Saturday, dropping them two games behind the Impact (4-0) for first place in the East “B” Division.

Troy, the three-time defending NFA champion, is 2-2 after a pair of losses to Oneonta City, and is in second place in the East “A” Division. Watertown will get a bye the following week, then play four straight road games before returning to Carthage for its regular-season finale against Utica on Aug. 10.
