MASSENA - Massena Memorial Hospital is searching for a new chief financial officer after Sean Curtin accepted a position in his hometown.
Mr. Curtin has been the chief financial officer since 2011, replacing Kelly M. Tiernan who had accepted a position as CFO at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center on March 1, 2011. Prior to that, he had been the hospitals director of finance and reimbursement.
He has accepted a position as vice president of finance and chief financial officer at Alice Hyde Medical Center, Malone.
Sean has done an excellent job for Massena Memorial Hospital during his brief tenure as chief financial officer. He assisted us through the complex funding issues of medical practice acquisition as well as the development of the financial framework for the construction of our new medical office building, MMH CEO Charles F. Fahd II said.
We wish him well in his new endeavor as vice president of finance and chief financial officer of Alice Hyde Center in Malone, he said.
Mr. Curtin also received well wishes from the hospitals Board of Managers during their June meeting.
On behalf of the board we appreciate your efforts, board President Andrew Spanburgh said. He saved a lot of jobs and brought us in a lot of help and we wish you well.
Mr. Curtin has already departed for his new position, and Mike Tortoriello, MMHs director of accounting and finance, is filling in as acting chief financial officer, according to Senior Director of Planning and Public Relations Tina R. Corcoran. Mr. Tortoriello has been with MMH since 2011.
He has about 30 years of experience in the accounting, comptrolling and reimbursement field. He has been here at Massena Memorial Hospital as director of accounting and finance for two years. Of his 30 years of accounting and finance experience, 20 of them are within health care. He brings a lot to the table, she said.
Having Mr. Tortoriello already on board ensured a smooth transition with Mr. Curtins departure, Mrs. Corcoran said.
Theres great continuity, and he knows all the people on the finance team, which I think is imperative. Hes implementing some idea of his own to build the team, which is important, she said.
One of Mr. Tortoriellos visions is to implement a team that would review the revenue cycle - when a patient walks in the door, through the whole process to make sure everything within the revenue cycle is being addressed, Mrs. Corcoran said.
He said, that, when building a team, its important to have all the key people there. The best thing to do is peel back the layers, and youll get to the root of any problem.
His approach is providing a team approach to finance, Mrs. Corcoran noted.
Hospital officials, meanwhile, are currently advertising to fill Mr. Curtins position. She said Mr. Fahd had already completed a couple of candidate interviews.
