State police join investigation into missing Potsdam court funds

POTSDAM — State police are now involved in what has been an internal and state comptroller’s investigation into missing money in Potsdam Town Court.

A state trooper in the Computer Crimes Unit at Ray Brook was unable to comment on the investigation as it is ongoing, but said it is being headed by Investigator Timothy J. Peets of the Canton barracks.

Investigator Peets could not be reached for comment Friday.

An investigation by the state comptroller’s office has been ongoing, according to town Supervisor Marie C. Regan.

“We are aware of the situation and we are looking into it and may take further action,” state comptroller spokesman Brian M. Butry said.

But Mrs. Regan and other town board members have remained silent on the investigation, which began with the suspension of Court Clerk Mary Jo E. Guyette about two weeks ago.

Ms. Guyette is responsible for administrative duties, including managing paperwork and paying the bills.

The Town Council has not been kept up to date with the state police investigation.

“I have had no conversations with them,” Mrs. Regan said Friday. “It’s our policy not to comment on personnel matters until they are resolved.”

Ms. Guyette could not be reached for comment on the continued investigation. Her suspension with pay, and the investigations, have left a lot of lingering questions, such as when the matter surfaced, the amount of money in question or what happened to the funds.

The exact date of Ms. Guyette’s suspension has not been disclosed and no criminal charges have been filed against her.
