Sheriff warns residents of potential scam calls

CANTON — St. Lawrence County residents are being warned of a potential phone scam.

Sheriff Kevin M. Wells said Tuesday that his office has received reports that residents have received phone calls from Securus Customer Service.

According to a release put out by the sheriff, the calls are coming from 866-847-1251 and a person on the other end is claiming to represent the sheriff’s office, “demanding money for phone calls from the inmates.”

An attempt to reach an operator at the number provided by the sheriff’s office landed only an automated voice that said anyone receiving calls from the number were receiving a “text to connect” call from an inmate at a correctional facility where Securus provides telephone service.

“The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office will never contact you to make payments for inmate phone calls nor will the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facilities Inmate phone provider,” Sheriff Wells said in the statement. Securus is not connected with the jail.

The calls are not legitimate, he said, and residents who receive them are asked to disregard them and report them to the sheriff’s office at 379-2222.
