Don’t increase regressive sales tax

This is in response to your lead story “Senate lets county hike sales tax” in Sunday’s paper. The message is that St. Lawrence County wants to raise its sales tax by one percent and lower property taxes by 14 percent. If Mr. Cuomo signs this bill into law, it will hurt the poor people who must spend everything they earn to live on while the wealthy land owners will get a tax break. For example if a working person earns $35,000 a year, they will probably have to spend all of it to live on and will be taxed on 100 percent of their earnings. While a person earning $250,000 may only need to spend half of their earnings to live on and thus be taxed on only half of their income.

It seems to me that the sales tax is regressive and is another move to take from the needy and give to the greedy.
