Massena Memorial looking for new chief financial officer

MASSENA — Massena Memorial Hospital is searching for a new chief financial officer after Sean M. Curtin accepted a position in his hometown.

Mr. Curtin has been the CFO since 2011, replacing Kelly M. Tiernan, who had accepted a position as CFO at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg, on March 1, 2011.

Prior to that, Mr. Curtin was the hospital’s director of finance and reimbursement.

He has accepted a position as vice president of finance and CFO at Alice Hyde Medical Center, Malone.

“Sean has done an excellent job for Massena Memorial Hospital during his brief tenure as chief financial officer,” said Massena Memorial Hospital CEO Charles F. Fahd II.

“He assisted us through the complex funding issues of medical practice acquisition, as well as the development of the financial framework for the construction of our new medical office building,” Mr. Fahd said.

“We wish him well in his new endeavor as vice president of finance and chief financial officer of Alice Hyde Center in Malone,” Mr. Fahd said.

Mr. Curtin also received good wishes from the hospital’s board of managers during its June meeting.

“On behalf of the board, we appreciate your efforts,” President Andrew T. Spanburgh said. “He saved a lot of jobs and brought us in a lot of help, and we wish you well.”

Mr. Curtin already has departed for his new job. Michael J. Tortoriello, Massena Memorial Hospital’s director of accounting and finance, is filling in as acting CFO, said Tina R. Corcoran, senior director of planning and public relations.

Mr. Tortoriello has been with Massena Memorial since 2011.

“He has about 30 years of experience in the accounting, comptrolling and reimbursement field,” Mrs. Corcoran said.

Mr. Tortoriello “has been here at Massena Memorial Hospital as director of accounting and finance for two years. Of his 30 years of accounting and finance experience, 20 of them are within health care. He brings a lot to the table,” she said.

Having Mr. Tortoriello already on board ensured a smooth transition with Mr. Curtin’s departure, Mrs. Corcoran said.

“There’s great continuity, and he knows all the people on the finance team, which I think is imperative. He’s implementing some ideas of his own to build the team, which is important,” she said.

One of Mr. Tortoriello’s visions is to implement a team that would review the revenue cycle, “when a patient walks in the door, through the whole process, to make sure everything within the revenue cycle is being addressed,” Mrs. Corcoran said.

“His approach is providing a team approach to finance,” Mrs. Corcoran said.

Massena Memorial Hospital officials, meanwhile, are advertising to fill Mr. Curtin’s position.

Mrs. Corcoran said Mr. Fahd already has completed a couple of interviews with candidates for the chief financial officer job.
