Michael Stoner seeks third Oswegatchie town board term

Oswegatchie Town Council member Michael G. Stoner is running for re-election to a third term.

Mr. Stoner, 61 and a Republican, said his enjoyment in dealing with people and their concerns is a motivation for wanting to keep the $3,000-a-year position he has held since 2005.

“I try and be somebody whom the people can talk to,” he said.

A former state corrections officer and retired St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center therapy aide, Mr. Stoner is conveniently disposed to be talked to.

“I am in a position where I have the time,” Mr. Stoner said.

Mr. Stoner said that quality of life issues are as important to him as they are to town residents. Jobs, low taxes, economic development and basic services from the town, he added, are all essential to make life easier.

“You got to have two people working (in a household) to make ends meet,” Mr. Stoner said.

One accomplishment over the years that Mr. Stoner likes to point to is the town’s support of the Heuvelton Volunteer Fire Department.

“The fire department has always been a priority on my list,” he said.

Mr. Stoner is confident that economic development in Oswegatchie will really take off when the town’s proposed water district — encompassing the Route 68 and 812 corridors — is finally in place.

“The water district is still on the table,” he said. “That’ll be a door opener. The first that they (developers and businesses) ask is, ‘do they have water?’”

Just the same, Mr. Stoner appreciates the fact that many residents, especially the elderly, prefer that Oswegatchie never lose its small town charm. So he hopes that can be retained while economic development is courted and eventually flourishes.

“That is a very big question,” Mr. Stoner said. “I would like to see a balance.”

Mr. Stoner and his wife, Sue Ann, are the parents of two adult children, Michael and Michelle.
