Frederick Bean appointed to Ogdensburg Board of Education

OGDENSBURG — Despite losing his re-election bid in May, Frederick P. Bean was reinstated to the Ogdensburg City School District Board of Education on Monday.

Mr. Bean, who lost his seat to James P. King in a 310-198 vote, was appointed following the resignation last month of board member Betty J. Mallott.

Mrs. Mallott, who had served on the board for nine years, said her doctor had advised her to cut back on stress-inducing activities.

The board at the June meeting decided against holding a special election or leaving the seat vacant, and Vice President Michael J. Tooley recommended appointing Mr. Bean.

Mr. Bean said at the June meeting that he would be “very happy” to accept an appointment.

Monday’s board meeting was the first time Mr. King officially participated in proceedings. His was the sole vote against the appointment of Mr. Bean. “I was just trying to represent the people that put me in,” Mr. King said.

Mr. Bean could not be reached for comment.

“Let’s move on,” Mr. King said. “Let’s get the work done that needs to get done. I’m looking forward to working with everyone on the board.”

In other board action Monday, Ronald N. Johnson was elected president, replacing Mr. Bean. Mr. Tooley was re-elected as vice president.
