Franklin tax auction nets $684,324

MALONE — The Franklin County land auction June 26 sold 50 properties and brought in $684,324, according to county Treasurer Bryon A. Varin.

The auction was held in the Mo’s Pub and Grill Adirondack Room, where 117 bidders gathered in person, according to Mr. Varin, who noted there also were 11 on the Internet.

Ten parcels were redeemed by their owners, who had to pay delinquent taxes and penalties, for a total of $123,843.44.

The $684,324 is $98,863.19 more than was owed in taxes and penalties, according to the auction summary.

Approval of bids for properties auctioned off within the village and town of Malone is still contingent upon review by committees made up of members of the Malone village or town boards along with Mr. Varin and Legislators Tim Lashomb, R-Malone, and Gordon Crossman, D-Malone.

Mr. Varin said the committees plan to meet this week.

Mr. Lashomb had presented the idea for committees in early May. He said during a town board meeting then that the county Legislature has the power to rescind any bid and if the committee thinks the intentions of a prospective buyer aren’t to improve the property, it can ask the legislators to do this. “That hasn’t been done much in the past,” Mr. Lashomb said. “If the project works, it could be very effective.”
