Rams split doubleheader

ELMIRA — The Watertown Rams captured a 4-2 seven-inning victory over the Elmira Pioneers on Saturday night after blowing an early lead and losing the front end of a doubleheader, 5-4, in nine innings.

The Rams, who have won nine of their last 11 games, improved to 14-12 overall.

They remain two games in front of the Pioneers (11-13) and are now 2 1/2 games ahead of the Utica Brewers (9-12) for first place in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League’s West Division. Utica lost to Glens Falls, 4-0, on Saturday. Newark, which beat Cooperstown 2-1 in 11 innings on Saturday, is just three games back.

Watertown will host Amsterdam in a PGCBL interdivision game at 5 tonight at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.

It will be the last home game for the Rams before a six-game road trip because of the Jefferson County Fair. They will return home on July 16 to host the Adirondack Trail Blazers.
