Honored: The Thousand Islands Bluegrass Preservation Society gave scholarships to local students on June 8 and awards on June 7 at its annual Bluegrass Festival.

$400 Thousand Islands Bluegrass Preservation Society scholarship:

Jacob Harr, Watertown, grandson of TIBPS member Fred Phelps, will attend Jefferson Community College, Watertown.

Stuart Inzinna, Alexandria Bay, son of TIBPS members Sam and Amanda Inzinna, Alexandria Bay, will attend Cazenovia College.

Jennifer Robbins, LaFargeville, TIBPS member, will attend Jefferson Community College, Watertown.

Winners: Winners of the Jefferson County Battle of the Books, held May 11 at Flower Memorial Library, have been announced. The reading trivia competition was for children in fourth, fifth and sixth grades. Teams of three or four students earn points for 20 questions given in the game. Each participant received a free book and were invited to a movie night at the library.

Scholarship: Patricia Barr, Ogdensburg, recently received the Dr. Bruno Baltradis and Dr. James Brown Memorial Fund Scholarship. Miss Barr, daughter of Daniel and Marilyn Barr, Ogdensburg, is a recent graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy. She will attend SUNY Potsdam.

Scholarships: Scholarships were given to seniors at Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School, Parish, in honor of Amelia Michelle Wade. Miss Wade, who was a junior at APW, died in October 2010 from secondary pulmonary hypertension.

The scholarships are given to APW seniors who plan to enter the medical field. This year, scholarships were given to Kaitlee Benedetto, Victoria Stanton and Rebecca Trexler and were presented by Valerie Wade, mother of Miss Wade, at a senior awards banquet.

Receives grant: Abby J. Schadock-Hewitt, daughter of Rod Hewitt and Cait Schadock-Hewitt, Adams, has received a National Science Foundation Fellowship to conduct a research project in engineering over the summer. The project, through the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, is titled “Modeling of a Unique Shaped-Fiber Stationary Phase for the Large-Scale Purification of Antibodies.”

Ms. Schadock-Hewitt graduated in 2006 with honors from South Jefferson Central School, Adams, and in 2010 from the University at Buffalo, with a bachelor’s degree of science and concentration in medicinal chemistry. She is a Ph.D. candidate in analytical chemistry at Clemson (S.C.) University.
