CROGHAN — The Railroad Historical Society of Northern New York’s old train depot museum has reopened for the season, displaying its many artifacts and railway memorabilia.

The museum — which features an unusual model train display representing Lewis County rails, streetscapes and scenery — is kept open by volunteers throughout the summer, and this year includes the help of Katelyn McKinney, an intern provided through the Pratt-Northam Foundation.

“I love being around history,” Miss McKinney said. Previously, she was a volunteer at the location for four or five years.

“I’ve always really liked it here,” she said.

Looking ahead, the society hopes to have displays in the back room, which was once a storage room. The upstairs, former living quarters, may be turned into a room decorated for the period of the building’s construction in 1904.

Chicken-barbecue fundraisers are slated for Saturday and Sept. 7. The museum’s chicken barbecues are always a hit and sell out quickly, historical society President Donald A. Mooney said.

“We have a drive-thru, just like McDonald’s,” Mr. Mooney said.

Chicken sales, which begin at 11 a.m., are conducted behind the museum, where vehicles can pass through to School Street.

The museum is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Monday. It is on Route 812 in the village at the crossing of the railroad tracks.

Admission is by donation only.

The museum also will be open for both Iron Horse Days in October and Christmas in Croghan, set for Dec. 6.
