North Dakota duo arrested in connection with burglaries from DeKalb to Wisconsin

CANTON — The arrests of two North Dakota residents Sunday night after an alleged burglary in DeKalb led to the discovery of stolen property from additional thefts in this area and in Wisconsin.

St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies charged Robert J. Warren Jr., 49, and Louis J. Massei, 52, with second-degree burglary and petit larceny.

Police said the two were found leaving a residence in the town of DeKalb as the homeowners were returning. According to sheriff’s deputies, Mr. Warren is an estranged relative of the homeowner and learned of the address through a neighboring family.

“The two were confronted, but the burglary was not discovered until after Warren and Massei left the residence and the homeowners went into the house to find empty jewelry boxes on the floor,” police said in a news release.

According to police, the two then moved from the DeKalb residence and burglarized another family member’s home in Morristown, where handguns and other property, including a laptop computer, later were found to be missing.

Police agencies were given a description of the suspects’ vehicle with the warning that they were possibly armed and considered dangerous.

Mr. Massei goes by “Lisa,” according to police, and is a cross-dresser, the New York Post reported.

State police located the vehicle at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino and took Mr. Warren into custody without incident as he approached the vehicle at 9:10 p.m. Sunday. Mr. Massei was apprehended about 20 minutes later at the Comfort Inn, next door to the casino.

Sheriff’s investigators said that further investigation uncovered stolen property not only from the two reported burglaries in St. Lawrence County, but from one other crime committed in Wisconsin, where a wallet was stolen from a vehicle and a credit card was used.

Mr. Warren and Mr. Massei were both arraigned by Oswegatchie Town Justice Michael Hebert. Mr. Warren was sent to the St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, without bail, and Mr. Massei was held on $10,000 bail or $20,000 bond.

Sheriff’s investigators said there is an ongoing investigation involving law enforcement officials from New York to North Dakota.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 315-379-2222.
