City Hall to get $50,000 of new windows

City Hall is getting a $50,000 makeover this summer thanks to a grant secured by Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie.

The money is being put towards replacing 36 windows and the City Council voted to approve the bid for the project submitted by View-Tech, Syracuse, at Monday’s meeting.

View-Tech was the only company to bid on the project.

City Manager John M. Pinkerton said he expects the work to begin this month.

The project won’t get to the more than 100 windows at City Hall, however, because the grant money the city received came with a requirement that the windows be historically accurate for the building, which was completed in 1930, Mr. Pinkerton said.

Mr. Pinkerton added that historically accurate windows are more expensive than if the city were to purchase them without regard to historical restoration.

“If we were using our own money we wouldn’t have to go to this extreme,” Mr. Pinkerton said.

Councilwoman Jennifer L. Stevenson said, “Since we’re investing so much in our downtown to try and revitalize it, I would like to continue to try to [do historical restoration] as much as possible.”

Mayor William D. Nelson agreed, noting that restoration can be accomplished over time. “You’ll notice the difference if we restore it to historical standards.”

Mr. Pinkerton said his office will be looking for addition grant money over the coming months to begin replacing other windows.
