Two first-time participants and the all-time winningest player in city mens golf history advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2013 City Mens Golf Championships on Monday at Ives Hill Country Club.
Shawn Thomas, the seventh seed in the championship flight, squandered a 3-up lead with five holes to play before eking out a 1-up win over No. 23 Dan Mullin in an exciting bottom-bracket match. Thomas chipped to within a foot on the 18th hole for a winning birdie after Mullin just missed a 10-foot birdie putt of his own.
Thomas next draws the winner of the match between medalist and No. 2 seed Adam Brown and No. 15 Brian Phillips.
Newcomer Glenn Gleason, the No. 22 seed who ousted No. 11 Joel Daily in the first round, continued his stellar play with an impressive 5-and-4 victory over former champion and No. 6 seed Tim Phillips. Gleason moves on to meet 11-time champion Bob Hughes, the No. 3 seed, who eliminated No. 19 Chris Denesha, last years runner-up, 6 and 4 in another bottom-bracket match.
The other five second-round matches must be completed by Wednesday.
