PHANTOM PHOTO – If I actually stop to consider everyone who has part in making sure this column is beside your morning coffee on Wednesday morning, I am absolutely amazed the process works so well.

The column must find its way onto the page from my notes on shopping lists and bank statements. That column goes from my computer via the internet to the office computer and then through the hands of reporters, Editor Ryne, those in layout and composition and on to printing.

And if all of that works the newspaper carrier is relied upon to transport that newspaper carrying our Over Coffee visit to your home for reading on a Wednesday morning. When this process is successful, I am thrilled – and on the majority of weeks it does marvelously. And I thank each one who has a part in making sure this column is included in your Wednesday publication and makes it to your home.

Last week if you read this column online, you had the opportunity of seeing a wonderful picture of Jackie Mitchell and her husband Randy and Jackie’s adopted tiger Angel at Angel’s home in Tiger World in North Carolina. If you enjoy reading the newspaper by holding the newsprint in your hand, you found no picture accompanying this column. And for that I apologize.

It seems there was a Phantom Photo accompanying our Over Coffee visit last week. My sister living in Italy saw the picture while the proofreader in our Bombay home did not. Hopefully this week that photo is at the top of this column – if it is not I will try another day!

Jackie Mitchell of Massena is the proud adoptive mom of a 12 year old tiger named Angel. Last week I shared her story of visiting with Angel in his North Carolina home. I loved the picture of Jackie and Randy and Angel. Angel seemed to know the love Jackie had for him because in the picture Angel is shown licking Jackie’s arm through the fenced enclosure.

I thank Jackie and Randy for sharing their picture with me – and hope you each get to see this amazing photo.

NORTH COUNTRY FUN – My heartfelt thanks to the Norwood Fire Department. What a spectacular fireworks display and such fun memories as we went this year with our grandchildren. Now some 30 years or so ago we would drive to Norwood with our two sons. Then we would find a parking spot on a side road leading to Norwood. How they loved the fireworks from the vantage point of a roadside blanket.

This year our once young son now grown was visiting with his wife and our two grandchildren. We drove to the main road passing through Norwood. What a joy it was to sit with our grandchildren in the back of their car waiting with anticipation for a truly amazing night sky. The night was lovely – no rain at all! Perfect for watching fireworks from a nearby vantage point. It was a marvelous time with family and a truly spectacular evening of fireworks.

The Norwood Fire Department is to be commended for their day long activities and for the extraordinary fireworks display. I hope everyone seated along the roadside donated as the firemen’s boots were carried form car to car. It is important to support all of our local volunteer fire departments. And on July 4 we were proud to support the Norwood Fire Department!

Later in the week we were shopping at the St. Lawrence Centre Mall. While her brother shopped, our granddaughter decided to check and see if by any chance the arena might be open – it was! How thrilled she was, she rented a pair of skates (a type she is not able to rent at home downstate!) and was on the ice during public skating (this grandmother was horrified – she had no mittens, no jacket for warmth and was wearing short, shorts! But she was happy on the ice at the Mall!).

Isn’t the North Country a marvelous place to live and skate? Our granddaughter certainly thought so – for in July on a hot, humid day, she found a marvelous place to stay cool and have fun on a July afternoon!

CELEBRATION – Please remember that July 11 is the 100th birthday of Mary Fiacco. Please help me to fill her room at the St. Regis Nursing Home with the most wonderful of birthday wishes. She is a resident in Room 111 of the St. Regis Nursing Home on 89 Grove Street, Massena 13662. Warmest wishes for a beautiful 100th birthday.
