To The Editor:

My name is Paul H. Mallette and the other day I was asked if I would write a letter about our experience at St. Marguerite d’Youville Academy. I had been wanting to for some time, but let’s face it; there is little time available to do justice in clearly presenting “Why St. Marguerite d’Youville Academy?”

Our story begins as grandparents and with a hurricane called Katrina, a Roman Catholic priest, and a school that wanted to help victims of Katrina.

Father Terry LaValley was made aware of our situation at a Sunday Mass and offered to help place our grandchildren in local schools. We had one granddaughter was kindergarten, the other was middle school. Father LaValley encouraged us to place our youngest at St. Marguerite d’Youville Academy, and so we did. When we arrived to register Victoria, our youngest granddaughter, Dorinda and I were not prepared for the reception. The outpouring of help from the people overwhelmed us. It was shocking to us how generously physical needs as well as financial needs for both granddaughters were met. Why would people who don’t know us help a family in need? But now I know why – family.

Here we are, eight years later, and it is still family orientated. We are entering our third grandchild into the family of St. Marguerite d’Youville Academy. Why?

First and foremost – family! We find we need a support system in today’s world, that helping hand to assist in making it. Not just earthly family but one that is part of God’s family. The “hope” of a tomorrow is critical to success.

Secondly, we have found academically the critical start of a child’s life can make or break the child. If a child receives a good basic foundation, through careful academic building, encouragement, with a strong family support, there is a good chance they’re going to be successful in life.

Thirdly, discipline, morally and spiritually, is a strong point we’ve found at St. Marguerite d’Youville Academy. The discipline of starting the day with prayer, asking God to bless the day, help throughout the day, the freedom to do so without fear of ridicule or breaking laws—these will guarantee success. Models of Godly discipline through the education of saintly people who not only spiritually impacted our world, but morally and academically impacted it as well.

I could go on and on, but time and space always steals away the opportunity, so I need to close.

As Christians, parents, grandparents, citizens of this great country, we desire to be on a winning team, successful, well-rounded morally, spiritually and academically. If every child was given an opportunity to have a solid foundation from which to build upon, and careful assistance was also available, what kind of outcome would there be? Undeniably, success would be the fruit of that work. Dorinda and I support Catholic education, especially in the Ogdensburg area at St. Marguerite d’Youville Academy.

Thank You CHMC

To The Editor:

We want to thank the ambulatory surgery care staff at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center for the great care they gave our daughter during her tonsillectomy. The nurses, anesthesiologists and Dr. Schaefer were caring and compassionate, and we are grateful for the wonderful care our family received.

Thank you.
