MASSENA - The former superintendent of the Massena Central School District will begin work Monday as the superintendent of the Walton School District.

The Daily Star, Oneonta, reported Tuesday the Walton Central School Board of Education named Roger B. Clough II as its new superintendent at a meeting Tuesday night. The newspaper said his salary will be $140,000. The district has approximately 990 students.

Mr. Clough told the DailyStar.com, “I’m very humbled and grateful that the board chose me.”

He told the newspaper he was looking forward to seeing if programs that were effective at Massena will work in Walton. This includes an alternative education school that will address the needs of “at-risk” students, who might otherwise drop out. Massena Central eliminated its alt ed school during budget deliberations this spring.

Mr. Clough was chosen for a number of reasons, school board President Judy Breese, told the DailyStar.com. “He had a way of connecting with all of the stakeholder groups that interviewed him during the process.

“This included teachers, support staff, administrators, students and community. Other attributes included a real focus on professional development and an advocacy for shared services. His five years of of experience as superintendent at Massena means he will have ‘new ideas and new ways of doing things,” which will benefit the district, she said. “We have great hopes for a long and positive partnership,” according to the report in the Daily Star.
