Baking contest new feature at Lewis County Fair

LOWVILLE — There’s still time to tie on an apron and hone your baking skills for a new event at the Lewis County Fair. Organizers have teamed up with King Arthur Flour to bring a baking contest to cooks of all ages.

The event, set for July 20, will feature youth and adult divisions and is open to home bakers, not professional bakers.

Youth ages 10 through 17 as of last Jan. 1 will compete with their favorite chocolate chip cookies. They will present six cookies at least 1 inches in diameter.

Adults will prepare their favorite quick bread, non-yeast raising, for the contest.

All entries should be presented on a plate or covered cardboard. They will be judged on overall appearance, flavor, creativity, moistness and texture.

The full recipe, preferably typed, must accompany each entry. No mixes may be used in creating submissions. Frostings or toppings are allowed, with themes and decorations encouraged.

Exhibitors are required to bring the opened bag of King Arthur Flour or submit a UPC label from the flour bag at the time of entry or a store receipt stating the purchase of King Arthur Flour.

Entry forms may be found online at, in the fair premium books, at the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce or Lewis County Cooperative Extension or by calling the Lewis County Agricultural Society office at 376-8333.
