HAMMOND – The town will meet with state representatives this month in an effort to establish the 1,000 Islands-St. Lawrence River as a top scenic area in the state.

Town Supervisor Ronald W. Bertram said Tuesday the town will sponsor the meeting among St. Lawrence County legislators, various organizations and state representatives July 23 in the hopes of garnering support to designate the region as a Scenic Area of Statewide Significance.

“We’ve decided to hold the meeting at Singer Castle so we can show the state what we have to offer here,” Mr. Bertram said.

If the town and municipalities from St. Lawrence County and the 1,000 Islands are successful, the designation through the state Department of State’s Office of Communities and Waterfronts will offer protection to scenic landscapes.
