Ives park improvements to begin next month

POTSDAM — Ives Park will soon be getting a face lift.

Chazen Companies Inc., Glens Falls, submitted plans for park improvements this week, including a walkway along the Raquette River.

The village has planned to make improvements at the park for nearly a year, and construction is set to start this summer and continue into the fall.

The village’s Department of Public Works will handle the construction itself. Officials will meet with Chazen Companies on July 24 to finalize the plans before work begins.

“If everything is acceptable the Department of Public Works can start construction work in August,” said Planning and Development Director Frederick J. Hanss.

A new walking path will follow the Raquette River and connect to Bay Street.

Nights at the park will get brighter with the installation of old-fashioned lampposts, designed to remind people of the park’s creation in the 1930’s.

The whole thing is designed to make the small riverside property more appealing, both to locals and tourists.

“It’s going to be a really lovely project,” Mr. Hanss said.

The improvements are being funded with state grant money. Further plans for the park include the construction of a new playground, kayak launch and open-air pavilion for the farmer’s market.

The project is one of the first steps in the village’s much larger Downtown and Waterfront Revitalization Plan, which is expected to take 10 years and $2.6 million to complete.

In addition to the park improvements, the village is planning the eventual creation of an artificial white water rapids park for kayakers.

The new walking path will eventually be connected to a proposed “Raquette Riverwalk,” a pedestrian walkway that will connect several village locations, like Clarkson University, Ives Park and Fall Island.
