Live Music, Touch a Truck, and Games Highlight Day 2 of Potsdam Summer Festival

POTSDAM - Day two of the 46th annual Potsdam Summer Festival 2013 saw new and returning faces packing Market Street, as well as an “Outer Market Mania” even, featuring fire engines, clowns, cup stacking and more.

The festival, which concludes Saturday, is sponsored by the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce and happens every year, usually during the second week of July.

Friday highlights included Outer Market Mania, kids’ gamesin the Big Lots parking lot and two Cubby T. Clown performances. Outer Market Mania was full of activities like “Touch a Truck,” many children’s games (frisbee, ring toss, cup stacking), and a bike safety course.

One of the bike safety course staff members was Ruth A. Fishbeck, executive director of the St. Lawrence County Health Initiative.

“We work all over the community to try and get people more physically active and eating better. Kids on bikes is natural, but we want them to do it safely. We’re combining this with the county bike safety program and the village PD is here helping the kids and interacting with them; teaching them how to ride safely and not get hit out there,” she said.

Another happy family who was exploring multiple activities was David Wells and his crew.

“It’s the first time we’ve been back in a while. We used to come all the time. We had some food, just got done playing a little while ago, (the kids) got their faces painted, it’s been good,” Mr. Wells said.

Tanya Hewitt and her son, Clark, from Norwood, have been having such a good time that they plan to attend all three days of the event.

“We went yesterday, we’re going to go today, and we’re going to go tomorrow. We’re definitely going to go to the fire race,” Ms. Hewitt said.

The festival will conclude with another action-packed day Saturday. Highlights of the final day include a police auction, a comedy variety show, and the Firemen’s Run to the River.
