CANTON -The Canton Village Board is expected to appoint a new police chief at their 7 p.m. Monday meeting.

Mayor David P. Curry said the appointment will be on a provisional basis that could be followed by a permanent appointment after the provisional time period expires.

Mr. Curry said village officials have interviewed the top three scorers on a police chief civil service exam.

The top three candidates include Nathaniel A. Amritt of Nassau County, Det. Augustus T. “Gus” Burns, Lisbon, and Deputy Shawn Wells, both of the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department. Lori A. McDougal, a sergeant with the Canton village police force, was the fourth highest scorer.

Temporary Police Chief Victor N. Rycroft’s appointment expires Aug. 13.
