Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced last week that New York was selected as one of four states to participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Greek Yogurt Pilot Program in the National School Lunch Program for the 2013-14 school year.

The goal of the program is to test the cost effectiveness of including Greek yogurt in school meals. The USDA now is seeking bidders to supply 4-ounce and 24-ounce containers of Greek yogurt to schools across the state.

Also participating in the program are Arizona, Idaho and Tennessee.

New York beat out California to lead the nation in yogurt production in 2012, producing 692 million pounds compared with the Sunshine State’s 587 million pounds. New York ranks fourth in the nation for milk production, generating 13.2 billion pounds of milk in 2012.
