SACKETS HARBOR — A group of re-enactors on Saturday fired a “3-pounder” cannon representing a type of firepower used during the War of 1812.

Theodore L. Schofield, one of the re-enactors dressed in period clothing, said the cannon, named for its ability to fire three-pound shots, was one of the smaller pieces of artillery that would have been used, and that it could be placed in either a vessel or a garrison setting.

“It gives people a way to better understand what they may have read or heard, and it gives them a better understanding of actual, day to day, what may have gone on,” he said. “It gives them a bit of a more tangible example of what transpired.”

The cannon firing was part of an 1812 living history demonstration Saturday afternoon at the Sackets Harbor Battlefield state historic site. In addition to the cannon firing, the event included an encampment representing how people during the war lived at that time.

The 1812-era Marines will be among the hundreds of re-enactors in place for the battlefield site’s annual War of 1812 weekend, scheduled Aug. 3 and 4.
