Former custodian charged in theft from employer

POTSDAM — A Potsdam man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly stole almost $2,000 from his former employer.

Russell P. Snyder Jr., 50, was arrested by village police and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a class E felony, in the alleged theft of $1,838 in cash from a local business office, where he was employed as a custodian.

Police said they are treating the business as a victim and would not release its name or location.

The theft occurred after hours and police were called to the scene the following morning for what appeared to be and was reported as a break-in or burglary scene, according to a police report.

Investigators said they were able to determine that the crime scene had been staged to look like a break-in.

The time and date of the alleged break-in were not immediately available.

Mr. Snyder was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Village Court.
