POTSDAM - The Potsdam Village Board voted 3-1 Monday to tighten the definition of fraternities and sororities, after a months-long discussion on how to curb bad behavior by Greek organizations.
The new definition states that a fraternity or sorority is an organization of students recognized by either SUNY Potsdam or Clarkson University. Under the old law, they were defined as groups recognized by either the local colleges or a national body.
This made it tough for the village to evict unruly students who owned group homes in Potsdam and were unrecognized by the college.
Trustee Stephen J. Warr voted against the change, saying he wanted to wait until the fall to get more feedback from the currently-absent students.
Trustee Ronald Tischler was not at the meeting.
