LOWVILLE Lewis County Fair organizers, event competitors and Coleman Bros. employees were under the blazing sun Monday, putting on the finishing touches before the fair kicks off this morning for its 193th year.
Opening ceremonies are set for 10 a.m., followed immediately by the always popular cheese auction. The midway will open at 4 p.m.
At 7 p.m. the annual fair parade will march through downtown. The lengthy parade draws a large crowd, often not wrapping up until dark, when guests then head to the fairgrounds for the 10 p.m. fireworks show.
Today also will see the beginning of setup of one of only two Twin Flip amusements rides in North America. The ride will make its debut in Lowville after a specialist arrives from Australia, where it originated, to help with the setup and conversion from European power.
Wednesdays Dairy Day will feature the work of Jerry S. Merrill, Rodman, as he carves cheese. Traditional events returning this year are Thursdays New York State Truck and Tractor Pull and Saturdays Demolition Derby.
Friday nights concert brings Greg Bates and the Outlaws to the grandstand.
Free shows of Ditsy the Clown, at 2, 4 and 7 p.m., and Kachunga and the Alligator Show, at 3 and 6 p.m. will run daily. For a full schedule of events, visit www.lewiscountyfair.org.
