Plimpton shoots age at Partridge Run

CANTON - Ogdensburg’s Bill Plimpton has enjoyed any number of athletic highlights as a player and coach.

He played on championship hockey teams at St. Lawrence University where he is a member of the college’s Sports Hall of Fame and he enjoyed a very successful coaching career at Ogdensburg Free Academy where he retired as a member of the school district’s administration.

On Monday he experienced another unforgettable day when he shot his age of 80 off the gold tees at the Partridge Run Golf and Country Club.

His playing cohorts on the day, Pat McGuire and Al Dailey, will also never forget it.

“Bill has been playing great this year after having a hip replacement but he didn’t realize what his score was. After he two-putted from 20-feet on the 18th hole to shoot a 38 on the back nine we told him he had shot his age and his face broke out in the most wonderful smile I have ever seen,” said McGuire.

“It was one of the most precious moments on the golf course I have ever experienced. Bill and I have played golf together for 37 years and it was amazing to be part of today.”

“It was so wonderful to see Bill shoot his age after the physical problems he has had over the years with his hip and the his knees,” said Dailey.

“It was just a great day.”

A day which started with a 42 on the front side where McGuire said Plimpton missed a few putts he should have made.

On the back side he surged into contention for the 80-at-80 with his flat stick when he sank a 15-foot birdie putt on the course’s number one handicap hole, the par fourth 14th. He followed with a birdie on the par three 15th hole and finished with a par on 17 and a bogey on 18.
