Lyme plans to conduct a feasibility study for Three Mile Bay sewer project

THREE MILE BAY — Lyme’s Town Council is floating the idea of providing municipal wastewater service to the hamlet of Three Mile Bay and hopes to secure a $30,000 state grant to conduct a feasibility study.

With the help of Bernier, Carr & Associates, Watertown, the town will apply for a North Country Regional Economic Development Council grant covering 80 percent of the cost of the proposed study.

If awarded, the town will have to match the grant with $7,500 of its own funds and in-kind services.

The application is due Aug. 12 and funds are expected to be awarded in December.

Lyme Supervisor Scott G. Aubertine said the study would identify what type of work a municipal sewer project in Three Mile Bay would involve and provide an estimated annual cost to users of the proposed district.

Ultimately, it would be up to residents to decide whether they want public wastewater service and the state grant funding would not force the town to move forward with a multimillion-dollar construction project.

Mr. Aubertine said the town has yet to conduct a survey gauging the residents’ interest in the service.

And before the town board can formally create a sewer district, it would have to hold a public hearing.

If the cost is reasonable, town officials said they believe a public sewer project would benefit the hamlet’s roughly 250 residents by addressing environmental concerns.
