SAFE Act opponent questions Trustee Garner’s reaction

To The Editor:

This past Tuesday I attended the Potsdam Village Board meeting in my effort to get resolutions against the NY SAFE Act.

In my presentation to the board, I used a comparison to Mr. Cuomo’s Women’s Rights Legislation, in the way that he took input and advice from the women of NY state while he took no input from the sportsmen, hunters or gun owners before he forced the SAFE Act through with his “Matter of Necessity” claim.

Ms. Garner saw fit to say I was prejudiced against women and a sexist. In my comments I said that I am all for women rights You do my job you get my pay, and yes I did make a comment about “late-term abortion,” which I feel is wrong but that I would never take a woman’s right to abortion away. I disagree with the proposed 26-week limit. If being against abortion and not wanting any of my children taken that way makes me a sexist then so be it, but remember Ms Garner I also said that I would never take that right away from you or any other women, just rein in the 26-week term.

Ms. Garner also said something to the effect that she thought it was awful that people would want to hunt with an “assault weapon.” If people could just realize that it is so much more than just hunting involved, it’s our historic constitutionally protected right to own the firearm of our choice, without fear of confiscation, which the SAFE Act takes away from us.

According to the SAFE Act, all “assault weapons” must be registered or sold out of state by next January, once registered it mostly becomes property of the state on New York, you cannot leave it to your son or daughter when you pass away, it must be,again, sold out of state or it will be confiscated by the state for what I assume would be for destruction.

This whole thought, to me, is an clear infringement on not only my Second Amendment but my children’s as well. It has been said that “registration is the first step toward confiscation” and it sure is starting to bear itself out in my opinion. The idea that New York state would inject itself into what I can leave to my children, in my passing in this way, to me, is an abortion of our rights as citizens of the United States of America.

I would like to mention that I did use the term “Ms/” as I do respect women, I was taught to hold doors for women, I use the phrase ma’am when speaking to women and I am appalled that a woman that has no clue who I am could call me sexist and prejudice against women and their rights.

I realize there is more to respect than doors and ma’am, but I have all the respect in the world for women. I was birthed by a woman, my mother, and a woman birthed four daughters to the world. I have granddaughters and even a great granddaughter whom I love and respect to no end. My wife will tell you, as she has me, that I do respect women but as a male of the species I do dumb guy stuff from time to time. No big deal, it’s a guy thing.

While I do respect Ms. Garner as a woman, I have lost some respect for the board member of the village of Potsdam.
