CANTON St. Marys Catholic School is advertising for a new principal to replace Marianne Jadlos, who was asked to step down from the job.
The Rev. Douglas J. Lucia, St. Marys parish priest, said he made the decision July 1 after conferring with the schools Education Council.
Mrs. Jadlos, a Potsdam resident, has served as school principal for the past five school years with her contract renewed annually.
It was felt we needed to go in a new direction for the future of the school, Father Lucia said. The pastor has the ultimate responsibility for the school and there were some things that needed to be addressed.
Father Lucia said Mrs. Jadlos stepped down July 3, a claim she denied when reached by phone.
I have not agreed to step down, she said. I currently dont know what my status is. Ive been advised by counsel not to comment at this time.
Mrs. Jadlos said she met with Father Lucia on July 1, and she was surprised when he requested her resignation. I dont want to comment any further, she said.
St. Marys parishioners were notified about the decision in the July 7 church bulletin.
Her devotion to Catholic education and her commitment to St. Marys School have been most evident during her time among us, Father Lucia wrote. We thank Marianne for all her efforts and we assure her of our prayers.
Before being hired as principal, Mrs. Jadlos she worked and volunteered at the school as a secretary and librarian. She holds a bachelors degree in music from SUNY Potsdams Crane School of Music and a masters degree in elementary education from SUNY Potsdam.
The school, at 2 Powers St., adjacent to the church, serves children through sixth grade.
Father Lucia was assigned to the parish five years ago, arriving the same year Mrs. Jadlos became principal. At that time, the schools enrollment was about 100 students. The projected enrollment for the 2013-14 school year is 85 students.
As a result of smaller numbers, students in grades 2 and 3 will be combined in one multiage class. Michael A. Hardin, a Brushton resident who previously taught in the Malone school district, has been hired to teach that class.
Educators interested in applying for the principals job have until July 28 to submit an application.
