Library Sundays still busy

Although Roswell P. Flower Memorial Library nearly was closed on Sundays this summer, circulation has remained high through the hottest months.

Attendance on Sundays has taken a slight dip, hovering between 140 and 200 people, but it is enough to keep the lights on.

“We’ve only been doing Sunday hours since the beginning of October,” library Director Barbara J. Wheeler said. “I didn’t really know what to expect other than that last year was the first year we were open on Saturdays and it was really slow.”

Attendance was the highest from January through March, averaging 213 people per Sunday. Items circulated averaged at 272.

From April through this month, attendance averaged 177, while circulation remained fairly stable at 252 items. The data include May 12, when no door count was taken, and June 16, when the attendance hit 140, the lowest it has been all year.

But attendance was 193 on July 7 and 178 on Sunday, both higher than the average.

Weekdays still are the busiest days, however. From Monday through Friday, circulation can range from 600 items to a little more than 800. Saturdays averaged 426 items checked out for June alone.

Mrs. Wheeler said she could not compare this summer’s hours to last summer’s disappointing Saturday hours.

“It seems to be significant,” Mrs. Wheeler said about Sunday hours attendance. “It would be nice if there were more people. We’re paying for staffing for five hours and cooling for five hours.”

She said she hopes attendance averages will reach 250.

However, there have been gaps in staffing despite hiring two more clerks.

Both Mrs. Wheeler and board President Constance A. Holberg have suggested using the new clerks to fill in for staff who need to take a weekday off, get sick or go on vacation.
