Local businesses stocking up on air conditioners

MASSENA - Even cooler than the new game console or the latest technology gadget is the simple air conditioner during summer weeks like the one just past when temperatures soaring into the 90s and high humidity.

With most people flying to the nearest big department store to snag the sweat-reducing appliance, many small businesses not typically thought of for air conditioners are stocking up on the popular purchase.

John D. Schneider, director of Marketing for Triple “A” Building Center in Massena, has certainly noticed a recent increase in air conditioner sales.

“We don’t necessarily sell a lot of appliances and stuff like that, so not really a lot of people think of us first for air conditioners. But we do keep them on hand because summer comes around every year and we did notice this last week that they’re selling very quickly and the ones that we have on hand are moving,” Mr. Schneider said.

Meanwhile in Canton, Coakley’s Ace Hardware owner Bill Coakley said that his store locations have found their air conditioner supply low of late due to increased need, but the stores will be re-stocking soon. Mr. Coakley is the owner of store locations in Canton and Saranac Lake.

“We have I think a very limited amount. We have another order coming in on Monday. We get two trucks coming in a week with air conditioners, and they come in pretty much year round. It varies, but we’ve probably gone through 50 air conditioners in the last 10 days,” Mr. Coakley said.

With the hottest days of summer possibly still ahead, more customers may be in need of the units and Triple “A” Building Center is always staying prepared for the possibility of another surge in this item’s retail.

“We plan a lot of those kinds of things far in advance to make sure that we have them. So in the past if there’s a big heat wave out west or something like that a lot of the air conditioners are snapped up by the time they get out here. So we try to make sure we have some on hand ahead of time, or at least have them ordered so that they’re here for summer,” Mr. Schneider said. “It depends on the summer, but we’re ordering more for sure.”

For Coakley’s Ace Hardware, air conditioners are usually even available during the not as scorching hot days in the St. Lawrence County community.

“We have a seasonal offering and people don’t traditionally buy air conditioners until the heat actually hits or until their unit fails. Air conditioners, de-humidifiers, and fans have been popular lately,” Mr. Coakley said.
