POTSDAM The Potsdam Central School District Board of Education soon may have another member.
Board of Education member Frederick C. Stone Jr. recently suggested adding a student representative to the board.
Theyre grumbling, he said, referring to the districts student body. I would like to see them have some input.
Mr. Stone said he feels it would be beneficial for board members to hear the students point of view and for students to have a liaison on the board who could provide them with accurate information about what happens at meetings.
Theyre hearing things, and theyre not accurate, he said. I think a lot of what students hear is coming from other students and their parents, who might not be informed.
Superintendent Patrick H. Brady said he thought the idea was a good one. I think that has some merit, he said.
High School Principal Joann M. Chambers agreed. I think the more engaged students are in school, the more happy and productive they are, she said.
Longtime board member Ralph L. Fuller said the board used to have a student representative. We did that in the past, but our meetings were too long, and they got discouraged, he said.
Mr. Stone said agendas could be reorganized so that items pertinent to students are discussed earlier in the meetings.
The student representative would not vote, nor would he or she be able to attend executive sessions.
