To The Editor:

Reading and listening to the news lately has taken me back 65 years. A young 18-year-old ignorant farm boy from Northern New York who enlisted in the U.S. Army hoping to learn more about the world.

Loaded on a train, transported to the red clay of Camp Pickett, Va., and thrust into the terrible spectacle of segregation. I was appalled by what I was seeing and hearing Southern cadre bragging about the nights patrolling streets, armed with baseball bats, hoping to find a N boy on the wrong side of the street regaled us with their stories of their conquests.

To see the signs on stores, restaurants, public toilets proclaiming; Whites only, colored use other stores and toilets. Black men cleaning these rest rooms, yet not allowed to use them seemed to be a bit idiotic to me.

Yet, “Stand Your Ground” laws passed by so many states seems to be a retrograde in our judicial system. Just walk away seems much more sensible. Just walk away. If you can’t walk away, then run away. There is no heroism in killing. Take this from one who has seen so much of it in a lifetime that he cries at night for the lost ones.
