BOCES program moving to former Catholic school building

LOWVILLE — Work is underway to prepare the former St. Peter’s Catholic School to be the new home for the Howard G. Sackett Technical Center’s alternative-education program.

The building is being updated before the beginning of the school year to make way for the Jefferson-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services program, which had run out of space in Glenfield.

“We thought at one time we’d build on to the Glenfield building,” said Jefferson-Lewis BOCES Superintendent Jack J. Boak Jr. “It was much more realistic to look at the St. Peter’s building. The church has done a good job at preserving the building.”

A handicapped-accessible bathroom, a new roof, additional parking spaces and cables for the computer system are being added to the 5439 Shady Ave. school building.

St. Peter’s has a full gymnasium and space that will be converted into a cafeteria for the students. The technical center lacked both for the all-day program.

Mr. Boak said that the students previously ate in their classrooms and that he is happy about the upcoming changes.

“It worked before, but it wasn’t ideal,” he said.

Double Play Sports Center also rents space in the building, though Mr. Boak said he does not foresee any conflicts over gymnasium space.

“Double Play’s programs are after-school programs, so we’re working with them to make sure those programs can continue,” he said.

Other than the additional parking spaces, most of the general maintenance and updates will be done by the end of August.

“We are planning to have the building ready for the students by the beginning of the school year,” Mr. Boak said.
