DPW to motorists: watch work sites

Ogdensburg’s public works department is asking motorists to be careful when driving by its roadwork sites in the city.

Director Kit W. Smith said Tuesday that, while there have been no injuries or property damage, there have been a few incidences “where motorists ignore the orange cones meant to detour traffic for short periods of time while minor road repairs are being made.”

Please be considerate, he said.

“Obviously, we want our guys to work in a safe environment,” Mr. Smith said. “These short detours are not long-term road closures, but nevertheless they could present a hazard to the motorist or result in harm to a worker that may feel he is in a secure workplace.”

The public works boss, however, emphasized that the errant motorists are in the minority.

“The majority has been good,” Mr. Smith said.

Mr. Smith advises motorists whose home driveways are on work-closed streets to talk to the work crew or call Public Works first.

“If in fact you have to pass through or enter your home driveway, please confer with the work crew before you drive into the site and we will make every effort to get you to where you have to be safely and without damage to your vehicle,” he said.

For more information, call the Public Works Department at 393-2300 or 393-2010.
