GREENSBORO, N.C. Syracuse University running back Jerome Smith and center Macky MacPherson each finished one spot shy of making the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason first team.
Smith, a junior and the top returning rusher in the conference, received 17 votes by the ACC media to finish behind Miamis Duke Johnson (58) and Florida States James Wilder Jr. (23).
MacPherson garnered 15 votes to place second among centers to Florida States Bryan Stork, who had 29 votes.
Placekicker Ross Krautman was the only other Orange player to appear in the top four at his position.
■ Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd, voted the preseason player of the year, leads the ACC preseason all-league team.
He is one of three Tigers on the team along with receiver Sammy Watkins and kicker Chandler Catanzaro. Florida State had a league-best six players selected while North Carolina placed four players on the team.
