The English Department at JCC is accepting submissions for its 2013 North Country Writers Contest, offering aspiring writers from Northern New York the opportunity to be published online and receive cash prizes.
The contest includes the following genres: short fiction, 1000 to 3000 words; poetry, not to exceed 100 lines; and essay/nonfiction, 1,000 to 3,000 words. Submissions in all genres must reflect a connection to the north country, be previously unpublished, in letter quality and double-spaced. A maximum of three submissions will be considered from any participant.
Past winners may submit works in a different category. The title and genre of the submission, authors name, address, telephone number, email address and word count must appear on a required separate cover sheet; only the title should appear on the manuscript. Entries will not be returned.
There is no entry fee. The deadline for submission is Friday, Sept. 13.
Winners in each genre will be awarded $100 and publication on JCCs website. Entries receiving honorable mention will be awarded $25 and be published online.
Submissions are preferred electronically as a Microsoft Word attachment in rich text format (.rtf) emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Nonelectronic submissions should be addressed to: North Country Writers Contest, English Department, Jefferson Community College, 1220 Coffeen St., Watertown, NY 13601.
Authors retain the rights to their work. Award recipients are requested read their winning pieces at the North Country Writers Festival Reading at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at JCC.
