Massena Cub Scouts enjoy Pioneer Day activities

MASSENA - Like true Pioneers, the Massena Cub Scouts recently braved a dark and windy morning and started out their Pioneer Day activities with soap carving, candle dipping, yarn doll making, and fire building.

As the day cleared up, everyone cooperated to make a lunch of pocket stew, johnny cakes, and lemonade. While the delicious odor of the cooking stew filled the air, Anna Peck and her family taught the boys about the kinds of chores that were done in those days and they got to learn to wash clothes on a wash board, and milk a goat and even tried the fresh goat milk.

Then Beth Frederick taught them a little about how helpful horses were to the pioneers, and they took turns taking short horseback rides. After lunch they finished the day panning for gold, learning how to build a litter and transport an injured person on it, and making a yummy banana treat for dessert.

Harry La Due was kind enough to offer his property in Norfolk for the event.
