AKWESASNE – Ms. Minnie Mae Peters, 101, of Kawehno:ke, peacefully passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 24, 2013 at Tsiionkwanonhso:te, Cornwall Island Long Term Care Faciltiy, where she had been a resident since 2004.

Minnie was born September 16, 1911 on Cornwall Island, the daughter of the late Andrew and Nancy Beauvais Peters. She attended schools on Cornwall Island and taught herself to read and went to cooking classes. She worked in various factories. She also was a cook in Greenwich, Connecticut for a time and worked in New York City as a chauffeur and housekeeper. Minnie also worked with the US Navy during the war in the ammunition depot.

Minnie enjoyed doing seamstress work, cooking, and hosted many gourmet parties. She also enjoyed square dancing, playing bingo, and traveling throughout the country. She especially enjoyed her vacations in California and Florida. She was a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church. She was very conscious in how she dressed and wore her makeup and jewelry. She was proud of her accomplishments in life and talked about it to whoever would listen to her.

She leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her special great, great niece, Bernice Lazore, who took care of her affairs in the past few years, and declared her to be her representative form the time she returned to Akwesasne as a resident of Tsiionkwanonhsote Long Term Care in September 2004. Also close to her were Great, Great nieces from Kahnawake, Kateri Deer and Norma Canoe; Esther Mitchell and Rose Thompson from Akwesasne. These relatives visited her quite frequently. She will be missed by her caregivers at the home, and many friends and family members.

Minnie was predeceased by her siblings, Annie Clute, Mary Jane Peters, Joe Peters, Catherine Beauvais, Raphael, Peter, and Toby Peters.

Friends may call Friday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held Saturday 11:00 AM with Rev. Jerome Pastores, officiating. Following cremation, interment will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Akwesasne, QC.
