Carthage-Wilna Fire District to sell old pumper

CARTHAGE — The dilemma about what to do with the Carthage-Wilna Fire District’s more than 20-year-old FMC pumper has been solved.

The board of commissioners, on the recommendation of Brian J. Draper, head driver, decided at its June 26 meeting to list the truck with Firetec. The company will receive 10 percent of the sale price. Mr. Draper also was able to sell a surplus pressure washer for $100.

Meanwhile, the bonding process for the fire engine on order from KME, Nesquehoning, Pa., has begun. Treasurer Linda R. Prashaw reported the process should be completed by Aug. 7, with a seven-year bond at a 2.29 percentage rate and a 1 percent attorney fee.

Mr. Draper said the outfitting of the new truck is on schedule, and a trip to Pennsylvania was planned to view the engine before it is painted.

The board approved seven new members to join the Carthage Fire Department’s probationary process. The probationary firefighters are Keith Russell Jr., Jason Payor, Joel Sabastian, Gary Young, Shawn Schermerhorn, Lorena DeFrank and Vincent DeFrank.

In his report, Chief Sean P. McHale talked about the problems regarding Firefighter-1 classes. The chief said departments have increased enrollment but cannot get the required training. He said the problem lies at the county and state level, which dictates the number of classes and the student/instructor ratio allocated per county. There is a cap of 20 students per class.
