To The Editor:
To acting state Office of Mental Health Commissioner Kristin Woodlock:
I am writing this letter to express concern with the possible closure of the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center. The job loss it would create and geographical difficulties that would result would be devastating to the counties affected. The business I work for, St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union, originated form the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center in 1954. The majority of the 500-plus employees are members. The result to the credit union alone would have a large impact. All other businesses would be severely impacted.
Along with the economic impact would be an effect on the wonderful north country way of life. The downstate citizens who love to travel north to experience this will have to stay where they are or travel out of state, taking their dollars with them because what they travel here for will eventually be gone due to possible actions such as this closing. We are a sheltered area with little economic development Moves like this along with other business closings will force families out oft he area job searching, and leaving areas where generations have lived. Our region should be given priority for state support due to our unique geography. There is a large potential for the true north country to be an economic generator for New York State. This possible closing would be one more way for the entire stat to suffer, especially this beautiful region.
Please consider this letter and all other letters of support, as they are very genuine and sincere, while you make your decision.
