Renovations at Ogdensburg Library may start next month

Renovations at Ogdensburg Public Library could begin as soon as next month.

Director Wayne L. Miller said Friday that contractors may be selected and on the job at the 312 Washington St. landmark and have enough time to finish before the onset of winter weather.

“My goal is to get it all done this year,” he said.

What Mr. Miller wants to get done is replace three clouded 1970s-era vinyl bay windows at the rear of the library, fortify 44 other original 90-year-old glass windows with energy-efficient glazing around their edges and replace thinning, weather-beaten stucco on the building’s western interior.

Also, he said, asbestos will need to be removed from the existing glazing.

Mr. Miller has been waiting for financing to line up before starting the work, specifically enough to provide a 50-percent match for state grants that the library has on hold. That match will be provided by a $100,000 bond.

The renovations projected costs are: stucco replacement, $49,464; window replacement and renovation, $52,6709; and asbestos abatement, $10,400.

Mr. Miller predicted that, eventually, the library’s entire stucco exterior will need to be replaced.
